What attracted you to the legal profession?
Each of us was drawn to law for slightly different reasons but all of them come back to a desire to make a meaningful impact. Law offers the opportunity to solve real problems, guide people through important life or business decisions and bring clarity where there is uncertainty. The profession combines structure with creativity and it demands both analytical thinking and empathy – a balance that spoke to all of us early on. For some, it was the intellectual challenge for others, the human element. In the end, law felt like a place where we could grow, contribute, and build something lasting.
Has the reality of the profession been what you expected prior to being called to the Bar?
In some ways yes, and in others, not at all. We expected the demanding workload, the responsibility and the steep learning curve and all of that has certainly proven true. What we didn’t anticipate fully was how quickly you are expected to mature professionally or how much confidence the role requires from day one. On the positive side, we discovered that the practice of Law is far more collaborative than we imagined. Working in a close-knit firm like Lyssiotis Law has shown us how important support, trust and teamwork are in shaping your career and in helping you excel.
Have you experienced any kind of discrimination from clients, colleagues or others due to your gender?
Gender bias still appears from time to time, even if discreetly. It may come through assumptions about who the “senior” person in the room is or in situations where assertiveness is interpreted differently depending on who expresses it. These moments can be frustrating, but they have also strengthened our determination to prove that professionalism and knowledge have no gender. Fortunately,
we work in a firm that values competence and character above everything else, and that makes a real difference in how such challenges are handled.
What advice would you give to Cypriot girls considering studying law or entering the profession?
Believe in your abilities, even when others doubt them – and especially when you doubt them. Law is demanding but it is also a career that opens countless doors, both in and beyond the courtroom. Seek practical experience early, ask questions, stay curious and build relationships with people who inspire you. Don’t be intimidated by the
profession’s reputation; competence is built step-by-step, case-by-case. Most importantly, stay true to your values. Law rewards integrity, resilience and the courage to speak up.
